Twitter Offering a Better Deal to Video Creators Than Youtube (TWTR, GOOG)

After announcing in June that longer videos can be uploaded to the website and creators can get engagement insights, Twitter Inc. (TWTR) wants to keep promoting the use of its video feature and is expanding its Amplify Publisher Program.

The company announced in a blog post that it will run ads against content created by individual creators and share part of the ad revenue with them, if they choose to sign up for the program. Until now this was only available to a select group of content producers like Buzzfeed and the NFL.

Users will be able to monetize their videos by simply checking a box before publishing and the content they upload doesn’t have to be exclusive to Twitter. The program is only available to U.S. users.

“We’re excited to announce the expansion of our creator revenue programs, which will provide creators of all sizes with the ability to monetize content in multiple ways and generate revenue at scale,” wrote Guy Snir of the product management team on the official blog. The company has also launched ‘Media Studio’ which replaces video.twitter.com and provides upgraded publishing tools and resources.

Twitter hasn’t revealed what the revenue split will be, but according to sources speaking to Recode, it is offering the same deal to individual creators as it does to those premium creators already registered with its Amplify program i.e. 70 percent of revenue goes to the creator and 30 percent to Twitter. Youtube currently forwards 55 percent of revenue to the creator and keeps the remaining 45 percent for itself.
