It's been more than 30 years since Microsoft introduced the world to Paint, and now the software is set for an update that makes it more useful in today's world.

A leaked video has revealed a new version of the application with a new 3D mode that lets users draw directly into the program via a touchscreen and stylus.

The new Paint Preview offers an interface that combines 3D models, 2D images, stickers and a community of tools for creating professional looking 3D content.

Rumors suggest that Microsoft may roll out the new program at an event on October 26, when the firm is planning a launch of other technologies, possibly including a desktop PC, reports The Verge.

Microsoft first released Paint on Windows 1.0 in 1985, which at the time only supported two colours at the time – black and white.

The application was never meant to be a go-to tool for artists, but rather a free program that helped users become acquainted with using a mouse and graphical user interface.

The most recent version only lets users draw simple images with a virtual paintbrushes and predefined shapes - but that is all set to change.

'We have completely redesigned the app and it is packed with cool new features,' the video showing the program says.
