Tech Crunch notes that the goal with the new feature is to help keep creators from taking off to rival platforms by providing new tools for engaging their audience, beyond videos. The video sharing site said that the new tool is a special release for the firm because it represents the deepest product collaboration they have ever done with creators.
The Google-subsidiary plans to feature the Community tab on every YouTube channel. It essentially functions as a News Feed for a particular creator, allowing them to post live videos, images, text updates, GIFs, and more to their subscribers. The Verge notes that as far as social networking goes it is pretty basic. It however, allows the site to compete a little better with competitor services who already have such features.
John Green said that “YouTube has always thought of itself as being about video,” however, for many it has largely been about community. He added that the best channels on the platform are not just shows you lean back and watch. Engadget notes that the site likely worked closely with creators to build something that both they and their viewers will actually like.
YouTube introduces Community to build its own social network. The video behemoth has been testing the new offering over the past few months with a handful of creators. It has now rolled out the service into public beta, and will make it more widely available in the coming months. Among the vloggers asked to help test it out were John and Hank Green and VidCon co-creators.
