New version of audio recording app for iPhone and iPad adds video

IK Multimedia has announced the release of iRig Recorder 3, the new version of their audio recording app which they tell us now supports video recording plus includes a wider collection of pro audio effects, expanded sharing capabilities via a number of online services and social media as well as professional exporting features. They say that iRig Recorder 3 now allows users to finalize superb sounding audio/video recordings directly on their device, share them with the world or export them for further editing. Here's more details in IK Multimedia's own words...

The pro audio recording app, now with video
While there are many video recording apps available, very few of them focus on an easy way of getting professional sounding audio tracks together with the recorded video. iRig Recorder 3 solves this problem, starting from a powerful audio recording engine and adding video recording capabilities for a truly complete content production solution. With more and more musicians, video-makers, bloggers, journalists, web professionals and enthusiasts willing to share their videos at a higher-than-ever quality, IK Multimedia have focused on giving them everything they need to record serious audio and video at the same time, anywhere. Whether for recording "selfie" videos, live performances, lectures, speeches, interviews and much more, iRig Recorder 3 is aimed at both professionals and enthusiasts who need a tool capable of higher versatility when it comes to creating ready-to-share, high-quality video with great audio directly on their iPhone and iPad.

iRig Recorder 3 supports both portrait and landscape audio and video recording, allowing iPad users to take advantage of the full size of their device's screen for previewing and capturing higher quality videoclips. Together with IK's iKlip Grip range of multifunctional camera stands for iPhone, or iKlip Xpand mounts for iPad, iRig Recorder 3 provides a great solution for shooting professional audio/video anywhere, on the go.

New professional audio effects
iRig Recorder 3 now comprises an expandable collection of up to 17 professional effects such as Normalize, Stereo Imager, Compressor and 3-band EQ as well as creative audio effects such as Morph, Reverb, Chorus and Delay. They can be applied to the audio recordings for sound optimization and creative purposes, doubling the number of effects available in the previous version of the app.

Natural fade ins/outs can also be applied to the recording in order to create natural transitions before exporting the final project.

iRig Recorder 3 is ideal for use with IK Multimedia's full range of portable iRig audio interfaces (both single and dual channel) and microphones for superior audio quality in the studio or on the field, and includes convenient, easy to-use on-screen waveform editing functions.

One video editing app everyone needs

When you scroll back through your camera roll, what do you see? For me, it's a plethora of videos and photos of my two dogs, but for you, it could be anything. Kids, grandkids, family members, trips and hobbies; our smartphones make it so easy to capture all of life's best moments. The only problem is that most of those videos and photos are destined to collect virtual dust, stored in the alcoves of our devices.

Creative types, and those who are well versed with video editing software, often turn their photos and videos into collages and stories. I don't have the patience for all of the trimming, filtering and sound-effect layering that's required to put a quick movie together.

Recently, I discovered an app that makes it easy for amateurs like me to create movies that look like they were made by professionals. It's called Magisto Video Editor & Movie Maker, and it uses videos and photos you have on your phone to automatically create "video stories."

Using the Magisto app is simple. You'll need to create an account, but after that, you can begin making videos. On the app's home page you'll find a + sign at the bottom of the screen. Tap that then, "Make a new movie."

Disrupting the Big Boys with One-Stop Video Editing

My partner and I were working on putting together ‘explainer’ videos for two companies that we work with. An explainer video is usually between 60-90 seconds long and using images and cartoon–type characters briefly explains the company’s operations, philosophy or business model. In todays’ complex tech environment these have popped up on many websites.

My partner has used outsourced ‘agencies’ in the past and told me they can be produced for around $350 each versus the $1500+ in Vancouver (certainly a local agency charges at least an order of magnitude more). I’ve used offshore creative agencies to do work for me in the past. The work is always unbelievably cheap and the turnaround is appealing because if you’re using India or China there’s a 12-13 time shift. I give them a job near the end of my workday and it’s ready by the next morning – ideal! I’d also say the work is often of reasonable quality if your supplier speaks English very well.

I opted to hire a new offshore producer in Pakistan to do my two explainer videos at a total cost of $175 CDN. What a deal!

The problem I’ve found is that they don’t always understand everything you say, and even with the best-written instructions jobs just don’t make the grade. I had hired a Chinese freelancer to tweak a logo redesign for $15. "Astounding!" you might say, but it’s not what I wanted. They all say they are happy to redo the work and they will do so enthusiastically, but in the end, the task cannot compare to what I can get from an established agency in metro Vancouver who understands not only what I need but also what I don’t even know that I need.

Back to my ‘Made in Pakistan’ video production, the graphics were awesome, but I didn’t get the western flavor I needed. They did have a choice of narrators, and I had a sample voice to choose from. I got them very cheaply, but the process was so arduous that I didn’t send them back for an edit, I just accepted them as is and moved on. Every time my forgiving client plays them, I will forever think how the videos could have been better. My client thought they were ok, but I was disappointed.

Collect app brings 360 video editing to Android

Keymissions and Instas and Thetas, oh my! There are literally dozens of affordable, autostitching camera options out there right now that are making 360 on the go a reality.

Until recently, the ability to pair these devices with your smartphone meant little more than the ability to adjust your camera’s settings, preview your shots and remotely record. Although all the cameras’ apps come with a handful of editing tools (usually select playback view, trim and filters), there hasn’t been an easy way to combine multiple clips into one video on your phone, on the go—yet.

With Collect, a free 360 video editing app, users can skip the computer and edit 360 videos directly from their Android devices (iOS TBD).

The app allows users to combine, trim and rearrange multiple 360 clips into one video, as well as add filters and effects, including speed adjustment.

It even supports videos with resolutions up to 4K, depending on the user’s phone, and there’s no maximum video length, beyond your phone’s storage space.

The app also allows users to reset the 360 center to select the first direction the viewer will look for each clip, select music for their video from the app’s royalty-free music library, and share directly to YouTube and Facebook—all within a very user-friendly interface.

Editing Cutaways – A Short Video Tutorial

Editing quickly is not, in itself, a measure of professionalism. However, being efficient allows you to rapidly rough out ideas, increasing your chances of crafting the best story. In this tutorial, I want to show you a simple technique for editing cutaways into your timeline – a technique that will speed up your editing and ultimately allow you more time for finessing.

3-Point Editing

The most common technique for editing cutaways is simply dragging a suitable piece of b-roll down on to the timeline, and then moving it and trimming it until it looks about right. Wouldn’t it be better, though, if you thought about where you wanted the cutaway to happen, how long you wanted it to last, what specific part of the b-roll content you wanted to show, and placed it in the timeline, all in one smooth operation? 3-point editing allows you to do exactly that!

Firstly, place your playhead in the timeline where you want to cut away from your main sequence. Press ‘I’ to add an in-point to your sequence, and then play through to where you want to cut back from your cutaway, pressing ‘O’ to mark an out-point on that frame. Next, go to your source material and find the frame in your b-roll where the thing you want to show your audience starts – press ‘I’ to mark it.

How to Get Started with Video Content Without Spending a Penny

Video content is some of the most engaging, innovative, and results-driving marketing material an organization can create. American adults watch about 5.5 hours of video content every day. Brands that can capture a portion of that time can viscerally connect with their audience, earn consumer favor, and drive sales.

On-demand content, mobile viewing, and live streaming have already exploded. New video technology like VR and 360 degree video and will more offer innovative organizations even more ways to connect with current and potential customers.

Traditionally, technological and skill requirements created a high barrier to entry for video content. That drove up costs and turned many organizations off the medium.

But now video is more accessible than ever, and it’s worth any marketing department’s time to experiment with it. If you haven’t already, give it a shot–you may find that it’s a huge unexplored opportunity worth investing further into. And if you’ve previously been paying an agency huge fees for video content, you could find that you can trim them out and use those funds elsewhere.

If you want to adopt video content into your marketing strategy, here’s how you can get started—without committing to a huge budget.

If you’ve purchased a smartphone at any point in the last few years, it almost inevitably has a camera of viable quality. It might not be amazing–but it’s good enough to get the job done if the contents of the video are good enough.

The quality of your content reflects the quality of your brand. So it’s understandable why some marketers would be hesitant to publish anything less than pristine audio and video. But as long as your video is entertaining, informative, or immediate valuable, then people will forgive you if you’re not able to serve a high definition stream. Once you identify a demand, you can make some economical investments into better microphones and cameras in the future.

Bonus Tip: Lighting alone can make the difference between mediocre looking video and a great visual component that stands out. This is true whether you’re wielding a lower-end Android that’s a few years old or a cutting edge recording device for professionals. Watch a tutorial or two on lighting for video. In general, more light is better than less–and natural sunlight rarely looks bad.

Radio Stations Grow Their Video Ambitions

Radio broadcasters across the country are placing more emphasis on live and recorded video, in part to gain traction with their social media platforms.

Experts say webcams and digital video recorders are now common gear for radio broadcasters as they launch additional multimedia channels. Some radio stations are now training personnel as videographers and purchasing programs like Sony Vegas Pro, Final Cut Pro, MediaShout, Logic Pro and ProPresenter to edit video.

Radio stations also are developing video marketing strategies and campaigns for advertising clients in an effort to monetize video products and services.

Here are several examples of radio broadcasters embracing video as a means to expand their listener base:

VIDEO IN EVERY FIBER

Public broadcaster KEXP(FM) in Seattle has found many ways to incorporate video into nearly every fiber of the alternative and indie music radio station.

KEXP video is everywhere on social media from Facebook and YouTube to Instagram and Vimeo. Its new state-of-the-art live performance studio, which opened in 2016, is tricked out with first-class video production facilities so performances by visiting bands can be captured live and later uploaded to YouTube.

Jim Beckmann, online content manager and senior video producer, says he is amazed at the level of the station’s in-house video distribution.
